Appendicitis refers to a condition where the appendix becomes inflamed. It can sometimes become filled with pus, leading to intense discomfort. The appendix or vermiform appendix, is a small and tubular pouch. It is attached to the beginning of the large intestine.

Appendicitis is normally confirmed with an abdominal X-ray and abdominal ultrasound. CT scan or an MRI is also done.

Treatment for appendicitis includes antibiotic medications. In some cases, surgery is required. The surgical procedure involves the removal of the appendix known as appendicectomy. Laparotomy and laparoscopic surgeries are commonly preferred nowadays. Treating appendicitis from the very beginning can prevent further fatal complications.

As technology advances, it usually takes an hour to complete the surgery and the patient can return home within 2 days.
